The Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) has the pleasure of inviting you to a seminar with Antonio Navarro Wolff on:
Who are the Fighters in Colombia? FARC, Armed Conflict, Social Movements and the Left in Colombia
[Please be advised that this seminar will be held in Spanish]
Background
Six people have been recently convicted in Denmark of raising funds for extremist groups by selling T-shirts with their logos on. The group, known as Fighters+Lovers, made and sold garments bearing the logos of the Palestinian PFLP and Colombia’s FARC. Part of the proceeds was to be sent to the groups, labelled terrorist organizations by the EU.
FARC has been involved in a 40-year conflict with Colombian state forces and right-wing paramilitary groups, in which tens of thousands of civilians have died. Fighters+Lovers had argued that the actions of FARC and the PFLP were comparable to those of the Danish Resistance during World War II.
But who are the FARC, and what do they want? What is their relation to Colombian social movements and leftish political parties? Do they represent a broader constituency? How is the symbolic financial support sent from Denmark to the FARC guerrilla movement perceived in Colombia? Is there an alternative to armed rebellion for reforming the fragile Colombian state?
Antonio Navarro Wolff is a Colombian politician, currently serving a term as governor of the Department of Nariño from 2008 to 2011. He is a member of the Democratic Pole, which is the main opposition party to the Government of President Alvaro Uribe Velez. Navarro has been mayor of the city of Pasto, Congressman of Colombia and was part of the Constituent Assembly of Colombia that created the Colombian Constitution of 1991, in which he was one of the three collegiate presidents of the assembly. He has also served as Colombian Minister of Health and ran for the presidency of Colombia. He is a former commander of the 19th of April Movement (M-19) guerrilla group, which demobilized and formed a political party which he also led.
