A small church in a poor part of Bogotá runs a scheme to help some of the displaced children most at risk who live (if we can call it that) nearby, making sure they get at least some milk and something solid in their stomachs each day.
Last Christmas my wife and I asked them to get these children and a number of others together in order to hand out small gifts: a little toy or two, some biscuits, and some sweets. Nothing too expensive: about half of the toys we bought at a local wholesale market in the centre of Bogotá, the others came from three daughters of a colleague of mine where I was working then in DC. Little toys, burger restaurant give-aways, those kind of things. This was great for the kids involved, but unfortunately word had got around and there were so many outside we were unable to give anything to. This year we're going to be in Bogotá again for Christmas and we're going to see if we can improve on last year. We're hoping to invite more kids and planning to supply some sort of food for them as well as give them some little gift. Can you help? If you're going to be in Bogotá between now and Christmas could we ask you to consider bringing with you anything suitable you might be able to find? As we found, parents love to cull their children's "junk toys" collection and this is in a good cause: what's junk to them makes a lovely present for a child who has nothing! We found that even things that are a little damaged, or with parts missing can be pressed into service, though obviously badly damaged, fragile, or dangerous items are another matter. If you'd like to help, and are in Bogotá, passing through, or know anyone who is, please get in touch (
